Season 1, Serial 4, 6 Episodes
In this episode, the Doctor and his companions meet a guy who controls a mind-controlling machine designed to eliminate all negativity and violence of the planet’s inhabitants and create a perfect society (“What a wonderful idea”). Turns out some “bad guys” didn’t like being controlled, so years ago they figured out a way to overcome the mind-control device and attacked the douchebags in charge. The leader of the douchebags took the devices computer chips (the “keys) and scattered them all across the planet, so the “bad guys” wouldn’t find them. In the years since, the head douchebag made the machine more powerful and can now control everyone again, but he needs those keys, so he forces the Doctor and pals to collect them.
To tell you the truth, this is my favorite first doctor serial to date. Each episode is the story of the recovery of one key, and thus the action moves along quickly. Aside from the idea that this machine was a great invention (until the end of the serial when the Doctor gives his typical morality monologue) this story was well written and clever. Also, Ian wasn’t too much of an overconfident machismo asshole, and the bitches weren’t historical and screaming every five seconds (more like every 10, which is an improvement…). No spoilers for this post, as this serial is worth watching.
Yes! And wasn’t this the one where the Doctor starts wearing a cape? I think it was somewhere around here. And the conversation is pretty much:
“Doctor why are you earing a cape?”
“Shut up bitches you know I look fly as fuck.”
